China now we come!

In a report from US Customs I read that China continues to dominate as the top source country for IPR infringing goods. In mid 2008, China accounted for 85% of all IPR seizures by value, nearly US$ 100 millions! Footware continues as the top commodity seized in mid 2008, representing 36% of the total value of seizures.

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

If the confiscated goods from China represent the market we ...

Summer time - invention time!
Carl Thorfinn By host on Thursday, July 31, 2008 11:02 AM
Most inventions are probably created from a lazy perspective. Having a lazy time during summer starts creativity! The wheel, the dish washer, remote controls and all other inventions that make our lives easier are invented by lazy but not idle people. I spent hours of trying to create a self swinging hammock this summer and I realize that the problem I tried to solve is the same as in Perpetuum Mobile.

We notice the same activity from our clients and in September many patent applications are prepared, perhaps not for self swinging hammocks but often inventions that will make our lives easier.

Send me your summer time invention and I will evaluate if it is making the life easier during my last days of holiday ;-)

World Intellectual Property Day
Carl Thorfinn By host on Monday, April 28, 2008 12:15 PM

I read a message from Director General Kamil Idris at WIPO that "Each year on April 26, governments and organizations around the world join WIPO in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day. The theme this year is encouraging creativity. "

Wow! Have you ever tried to get in contact with Authorities during weekends? Now WIPO will have a celebration tomorrow Saturday. I wonder how many people that will show up?

In Sweden it takes 13 weeks before you have any decision in an electronic filed trademark applications and if you are unlucky and anyone files an opposition against your registration, then it takes 15 months after you finalized all correspondence before the legal officers start locking at the case! The backlog is even worse at European Patent Office.

My short reflection is that IP Offices should focus on shortening the Examination proceedings and deliver high quality decisions in stead of creating and ce ...

ASIA vs. Europe
Carl Thorfinn By host on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 2:53 PM

The growth in filing was particularly strong from north East Asia, which accounted for 25% of all international applications under the PCT.

If you plan to enter the Chinese market you have to be aware of the fact that patent filings are rising faster in China than the sun in Japan! The problem is not infringements; the problem is - if you haven’t protected your products – someone else has most likely protected your and your competitor’s products! You will by legal means not be able to enter 25% of the world consumer market!

However we are looking to the East and try to understand what is happening? Our politicians haven’t accepte ...

RECORD YEAR
Carl Thorfinn By host on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 2:51 PM

OHIM has had another record year for applications for Community trade marks and designs. The Annual report shows that in 2007, demand for Community trade marks was up 13% and applications for designs rose by 10%. The Office dealt with around 90,000 applications for CTMs and almost 80,000 applications for the Registered Community Design (RCD) during the year.

Moreover WIPO has announced a record number of patent filings in 2007. 4.7% more applications were filed under the PCT compared to 2006, taking the total to 156 100 applications last year.

I assume this will continue and if you haven’t start thinking about protecting your intellectual assets you are probably in the wrong business or soon out of business!
