Outsourcing – Case 1
Zacco was approached by a large company looking to study the possible advantages and disadvantages of establishing an in-house IP department. The company was considering outsourcing many different functions that were outside of its core business.
Zacco helped the management of the company analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of outsourcing the IP function. It was determined that outsourcing to Zacco would create more flexibility and increase the pool of expertise available to the company. The company would be able to become more paperless as all files would remain with Zacco and all issues related to IT, office space and personnel would be Zacco’s responsibility.
At the same time, there was a risk that the company’s advisors would become removed from the business and that the company’s focus on IP and its value would decrease. Additionally, the perception of Zacco as an external consultant might grow over time, while IP competences would be built outside of the company, and the company would be become dependent on Zacco.
To address these issues, Zacco advised the company to retain one IP specialist as a link between Zacco and the company. In addition, Zacco would have access to as much information about the company’s activities as possible.
In the end, the company decided to outsource the entire IP department including personnel and documentation to Zacco. The result today is that company has optimized their operations and can focus on their core activities and the actual implementation of IP strategies. |
