IP management – Case 1 Zacco was asked to assist a large multinational company within branded consumer goods in establishing a model for IP governance in the company and its subsidiaries. The IP governance model adopted by the company defined the company’s IP vision and the missions of the functions in the company and subsidiaries responsible for the management of IP including their tasks and responsibilities. The IP governance model was supplemented by guidelines that described tasks in more detail, as well as tools developed to facilitate and align the performance of the tasks defined in the IP governance model and described in the guidelines.
IP management – Case 2 A large Scandinavian company in the renewable energy industry wanted to commercialize an R&D project with the potential to generate significant income in an emerging global industry. Zacco’s role was to establish an IPR strategy and guidelines to manage the IPR in the project.
The company believed that further commercialization of the project would benefit from R&D collaborations and business development partnerships. IPR was considered an important business tool in negotiations with a third party that was interested in entering into an alliance, joint venture or licensing agreement. To meet these needs, the company adopted the IPR strategy and guidelines developed by Zacco, and decided to follow an offensive patent strategy during the research & development phase, especially in the short term.
