About Stig Benthin

Stig has 20 years of experience in the IP area and his practise includes drafting and prosecution of patent applications and Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs), oppositions and appeals, Freedom to Operate analyses, infringement and validity opinions, and assistance on license agreements. He mainly works within life science, pharma and food industries, e.g. within biotechnology, immunology, molecular biology, organic chemistry, cell culture, fermentation and industrial biotechnology. Focus areas have been on therapeutic peptides, T-cell engineering, stem cells, treatment of diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases, product formulations and manufacturing processes. Specifically, Stig advises on patent strategy and the connection between IP rights, product regulatory exclusivities and life-cycle management.

Stig has worked as in-house Patent Attorney in Novo Nordisk (2001-2005 and 2015-2019), as Head of Patents at LEO Pharma (2009-2012), as consultant and partner in IP firms (e.g. Zacco 2005-2009 and 2022- ) and in industrial R&D departments on product development and project management (Chr. Hansen and Novo Nordisk).

He has been involved in litigation in several EU countries, Great Britain, USA and China. Stig has drafted patent applications which have proceeded to grant, opposition and litigation in several countries for enforcement, including formulation and compound patents on two biopharmaceuticals that made it to the market and became multiple blockbusters.

Stig holds a Ph.D and M.Sc. in Biotechnology from the Technical University of Denmark, and a B.Sc in International Trade & Law from Copenhagen Business School.
