About Rikard Mikalsen
Rikard did his first degree in Marine Engineering and holds a Ph.D. in combustion engine technology from Newcastle University (UK), as well as a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree within Intellectual Property and the Law of the Sea.
Prior to joining the IP profession he worked at an energy research institute, and he has an extensive research and publication track record within combustion engine and energy systems technology. His Ph.D. work is among the world’s highest-cited research in the field of free-piston engine technology, and he is an inventor on several patents in this area. He co-authored textbooks on energy and marine control engineering, and has, more recently, published research on patent law in the offshore and maritime space in leading legal journals.
Rikard has in-house experience from the oil & gas industry, having worked as a corporate IP analyst with a major oilfield service provider and as Head of IP for a leading provider of offshore drilling systems and services. He joined Zacco in 2016 and supports clients in all patent-related matters, mainly in the offshore/maritime, renewable energy and upstream oil & gas areas. Core competencies include patent drafting/prosecution, patent validity, freedom-to-operate / risk mitigation, IP terms in contracts, and general IP management & strategy. He provides patent attorney support in disputes, and is very active in handling patent oppositions, administrative reviews and appeals before the Norwegian Patent Office and the Norwegian Board of Appeal.
Rikard speaks Norwegian, English and German fluently and works out of our Hamburg and Oslo offices.
