Camilla Rendal Nielsen announced as Patent Director for Denmark
5 March 2021
We are pleased to announce that Camilla Rendal Nielsen has taken over as Patent Director – Denmark & Sweden South from Johan Nyander, effective 1st January 2021.
Camilla started her career in engineering before moving into Intellectual Property, quickly establishing herself within both start-ups and multinational industrial manufacturing throughout the European, North American and Chinese markets.
Camilla joined Zacco in 2010, and she will now use her considerable talents to focus on the continued development of Danish operations while Johan will move to a wider business development role across multiple regions. Having now been with the business over 10 years, she has a developed understanding of the Zacco 360º approach to IP as well as extensive experience of the global IP market, placing her in the perfect position to drive Zacco Denmark forward.
We had the chance to catch up with Camilla to congratulate her and to learn a bit more about her experience as well as to discover what she has planned for the future of the new role.
Camilla, thank you very much for joining us today. You have a wealth of experience in Intellectual Property spanning quite an impressive career. Can you tell us a little bit about some of your previous positions?
Well, as you say I have been working in the IP industry for many years working within companies and in private practice before joining Zacco. I worked in-house as a European Patent Attorney for a multinational automotive manufacturer in Germany, a good experience which offered insight into how large organisations use and develop patents as well as how they can be identified and adopted throughout the supply chain. It also offered the opportunity to contribute to negotiations so gave a comprehensive understanding of how corporate IP was perceived and valued between stakeholders.
I set up an independent consultancy when I was living in Canada where I had the opportunity to advise small start-ups, which often involved working across North America, and later Europe, alongside some very talented patent attorneys. It was fascinating to see how priorities and requirements changed between large established organisations or smaller emerging ones and the differences in how they each approach IP development and strategy.
So with your experience across the whole IP Lifecycle, working with start-ups, SMEs and Fortune500s, what appealed to you about joining Zacco?
I had heard many good things about the working environment and expertise at Zacco. It is great to have the opportunity to work with experienced colleagues who provide such high quality work and we operate alongside many interesting clients who are at the cutting edge of innovation. You cannot work in the European IP industry and not know Zacco so I was really happy to join the firm.
What do you think is the most important thing you have learned while you have been here?
That one should always be open to new opportunities and there will always be an option to go for what we think is best for the client. We often act as advisors as well as counsel and, given our experience, we can usually see a fuller picture for how and where a client’s IP can be most effective or valuable. Clients appreciate this overarching insight and that is why they stay with us, but it requires an openness and flexibility to be able to identify such opportunities.
Very true. With that in mind, what are your plans for the new role? How would you like to see it progress?
I would like to continue to grow the Patent department here at Zacco. This involves a combination of developing the colleagues that we currently have and continuing to offer the same high quality work and counsel that our clients have come to expect from us. Our approach to 360º IP, alongside our Innovation, Identity and Digital Asset model, is well known in IP circles and this has led to increased interest from multiple industries and sectors. We are fortunate to be able to work with some excellent clients so I believe that this approach will lay the groundwork for ongoing success. As word continues to spread about the good work we do here at Zacco, this will inevitably attract new and interesting clients as well as talented colleagues.
So what will be the most important tasks in reaching those goals?
Well, it is quite often down to effective communication. I think communication is very important throughout an organisation and, although we are good at it, there is always an opportunity to improve. Communication is key to developing teams and colleagues; it is key to building a positive environment where we share knowledge and grow from each other’s experience and, finally, it is key to helping our clients understand our ideas and processes as well as how we will continue to add value to their IP portfolios. Communication forms the basis of all of this, so will help us to reach our goals more quickly.
We could not agree more. Finally, how do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I like to be outside in nature. I am very active and keep busy with lots of different things. I enjoy biking, both on and off road, and especially through the forest. I also enjoy swimming outside in nature, hiking, surfing and skiing. Mountain biking is good though because you can do it all year round. I do not have favourite destinations specifically but I am always interested in finding new places to visit.
Well thank you very much for your time today Camilla, we obviously wish you the very best of luck with your new role and we look forward to catching up in the future to hear how you are getting on.Back to all news
